Comfort Quilt Project - Background and Guidelines

What is the CLQ Comfort Quilt Project?

Beginning in February 2008, the County Line Quilter Guild, based in Southborough, Massachusetts, began making and donating comfort quilts to the Dana Farber Cancer Center at the Milford Regional Medical Center. Between February 2008 and August 2008, the guild delivered over 60 comfort quilts. Today guild members continue to create clean, attractive, and well constructed quilts for all ages as an ongoing donation project to the center.

Guidelines for Supplies & Materials

  1. Use only 100% Cotton fabrics to reduce possible allergy issues
  2. All fabrics should be washed, dried, and ironed to remove any excess dye or chemicals and prevents uneven shrinkage in the finished quilt.
  3. Be sure all fabrics, threads, and batting should have no odors (perfume, smoke, softeners, etc.)
  4. Use lightweight batting to facilitate ease of handling and comfort to recipients
  5. 4 to 5 skeins of embroidery floss if quilt is being tied instead of machine quilted.

 Guidelines for Construction

  1. Optimal size is 40 inches x 60 inches.
Piecing should be neatly done, top and borders squared up, top, backing and binding pressed prior to assembly.
  2. Light weight batting should be used, to facilitate ease of handling and comfort to the recipients.
  3. Piecing batting sections together is acceptable only if quilt is being machine quilted. If quilt is being tied, then batting should be 1 full complete piece for overall strength.
  4. Recommended that pieced backings be sewn with 2 close rows of stitching to guard against any weak areas.
  5. Finish all quilts with a full binding. Attach by machine or by hand but make sure it is solid and strong. Binding should be fully filled with batting.
  6. Tied quilts 40” x 60” size require approx 4 skeins of embroidery floss. Ties should be made with double floss ( 12 strands) and tied with a double square/surgical knot, and all should have the same length ( 1/2 - 3/4 " )  "tails", and be  no more than 4 5 " apart.
  7. Quilt should carry label on the back that reads “Made Especially for You from County Line Quilt Guild".
  8. Remove all stray or hanging threads and lint.
  9. There should NEVER be any pet hair.
  10. If members have questions or issues, they should contact the CLQ Comfort Quilt Chairperson.
